12:15 pm
pictures near the scene and you can see it has been pretty much cleared away and you can see emergency sponsors down -- responders down on the ground near there and there were two big booms heard near a hotel. there are injuries that much we know and just how many, that is unclear and officials say the numbers of people injured are changing by the minute. you can see there are no other people except those officials in yellow vests. right now we are monitoring feed coming out of cnn and other affiliates and we want to bring in eric rasmussen. what can you tell us right now. >> reporter: some of this information is from a "c" nbc
12:16 pm
report -- a cnn reporter and they saw two explosions initial lane 10 seconds later a producer said there appeared to be a third explosion possibly coming from a trash can across the street from where the first two explosions happened and obviously it was a chaotic scene on the ground. there are six to seven people injured and obviously there can be more than that. they have been taken to tents to treat fatigued runners and you have to know about two hours ago, the winers of the marathon crossed the marathon. the first runners in this very large race but there are many others still running in this race with about 45 minutes to go. certainly, it is a very chaotic scene on the ground right now as investigators and first responders try to get to those who are injured. this happened in the area of
12:17 pm
boilston street and i can tell you the area is packed with spectators even when the boston marathon is running as it is supposed to and there are many streets shut down on this street in boston. certainly it can be difficult to get to where they need to be to assist those who have been injured and as we look at this, you can see a lot of debris on the ground and possibly the viewing areas for the marathon have been damaged and again to recap what we know. three explosions there in the heart of boston during the boston marathon with all of these people out there for this huge event. we are still gathering information about how many are injured, the nature of these explosions and the nature of where they came from. we will show you updates throughout the day here on channel 2. >> and eric, i know if you can
12:18 pm
just stay with us for a second, and i went there as well and this is not just a local event, but the boston marathon draws athletes from around the world and it is one of the premier major running events in the world. i am getting some information here on the desk that the producer, the cnn producer we have been talking with has family members running in the race and certainly there are so many people who know somebody or a friend of a friend who has run in the race or might even be running in the race today. >> right, it really is the day of the year that puts boston on the map for the entire world. everybody is watching this marathon and everybody who appears to -- aspires to run the marathon, this is a pinocle and a citywide holiday and everything stops to some degree
12:19 pm
for everybody to enjoy this marathon and watch it and again we are getting new pictures on the ground right now. people are being pushed back at paramedics continue to push back into the scene and certainly if there was anything malicious planned, again we don't know that for sure. this is a time when there are a lot of people packed into a fairly small area. boston is a big city but when you are on the ground it doesn't always feel like that. there are a lot of people packed in a small space today. >> i can see we are getting live pictures out of boston out of a helicopter there. it looks like there might be another ambulance down there on the right-hand side and what we do know right now is there are some injuries and we do not know how many. as we said earlier, this was an
12:20 pm
event where people were packed in and if there in deed has not been explosions near the boston marathon, it certainly sounds like it is something which could have had devastating effects. let's send it over to them from cnn. >> reporter: this is something people have never even thought about this as a concern, do they take precautions, is there normally any concern? >> well, there is certainly a lot of security and lots of police officers along the way, military personnel and they are finishing on the finish line and it is one of the most secure areas of the route. we take that at the starting point and i have watched the marathon many times. and into the red sox, it is almost every year as i was a
12:21 pm
kid. it is difficult to see he that people were not prepared for this. >> reporter: certainly not, do we have our cnn producer on the phone. >> yes, he is here. >> reporter: matt, describe to us where you were, you were waiting for your brother, he was running in the marathon and had 45 minutes to go, tell us what was your vantage point and describe the scene right before and after you heard these explosions. >> sure, i was on boilton avenue where they were making it and it is packed on middle dread street and packed with spectators on both sides and they are 100 yards from where i was standing the explosion. it was not in the middle of the street but off to the side of the street i am not entirely sure but i heard a big boom,
12:22 pm
saw a big plume of smoke and 10 seconds later 20 yards across the street another big explosion, as big as the first one on the sidewalk and everybody started to scramble and there was a mad push for people to get away from the scene not knowing if there was more to come but moments later, they stopped the race and it started clearing out the area and ambulance with e.mc swarmed in. >> people were saying they were scared and actually shoved into a building. people inside the building were afraid something would happen inside the building if that was a safer or more dangerous place to be. but cops rushed everyone away
12:23 pm
from the scene. >> reporter: all right and we are looking at obviously scenes and this is right during one of the explosions that happened near the finish line near the boston marathon as the marathon was approximately half finished and the top runners had come through a long time before there were these two explosions, one of which you are seeing the aftermath right there, homecoming up in a big plume. we are hearing from their producers on the ground and there was a large bang on one side of the street. you can see just how many people were there during the final stretch and they are watching runners coming through for what is a huge event in boston and you can see the
12:24 pm
security personal there runel to investigate on the scene and lieu when when you are learning, are they running towards the victims and some of the ems are carrying those injured and how do they secure this area incase there is even more danger? >> well, the first thing they are doing is rendering aid to anybody they feel may have been injured as a result of these explosions and at the same time, the radio calls are going into headquarters to get additional resources because they have to now figure out what took place there. they have to contain the area, treat it like a crime scene and there is a number of things that have to take place driven by people in need.
12:25 pm
>> thank you all for standing by. myco anchor will be taking over, wolf to you now. >> reporter: thank you very much, this is a dramatic development, certainly unexpected and we do not know what caused these explosions and we do not know the complete extend of the -- extent of the injuries and at least a half dozen people appear to have been affected by these explosions and it is a 26-mile marathon which should be wrapping up mere the finish line. mike brooks our lou enforcement -- law enforcement what is going on but the scene is
12:26 pm
pretty gruesome. >> reporter: i am looking at the smoke and i was on the fbi's task force where they worked bombings all over the world and i am thinking there may have been a black powder device, it is hard to say but i am just hearing from my sources in boston that police and fire right now they are responding to a suspicious -- possibly a suspicious hotel on boilston street and need less to say, we always have two devices we are hearing about but we are always concerned as first sponsors that there are more devices and that whole area is shut down and we see a number of people and i am hearing from sources there might be two
12:27 pm
critical injuries still trying to find out whether the extent of injuries are being heard of with these first tee vices, wolf. it is clearly time and there are thousands and thousands of runners but you look at these area shots coming in and you can see some serious damage in the buildings nearby. >> you do and when you have -- whether it be a pipe bomb or what kind of explosive device that was used today wolf, there is a lot of damage and post glass scene. you see them in the area and they don't know exactly what they have. they are always concerned because we have seen a number
12:28 pm
of incidents here and they have been secondary and there are third devices that were used against first sponsors coming to the aid of those injured. >> is it possible it could have been a generator exploding or some gasoline exploding something along those lines as opposed to foul play. we lovely top know and that's why we are using caution and what i saw is that something atypical of a gas explosion, it is hard to say but to have two of them happen that the same time, we don't know exactly what caused that and we are trying to find out more from people who were there on the scene. >> let me bring in a cnn
12:29 pm
producer on the scene and he was an eyewitness on the scene and just methodically tell us where were you and what you saw? >> i was on the avenue which is the final stretch of the marathon, maybe a mile or two. i was passed by thousands of spectators making a final sprint to the finish and about 100 yards up to me, closer to the finish line, i heard an explosion turned and saw a big plume of smoke, coming out of a sidewalk or parking lot, i am not entirely sure, but it was off the street and everybody sort of paused, and this was 20 seconds with another big explosion. it was smaller than the first one so i'm
